Medical Weight Loss Program

Nonsurgical options for losing weight.

If you are struggling to maintain or achieve a healthy weight, seeing an obesity medicine specialist may help. This expertise is available close to home at Nuvance Health™ through our Medical Weight Loss Center.

We are one of the few programs in New York’s Hudson Valley and Western Connecticut with a medical weight loss program. Our nonsurgical offerings give you the extra support you need while lowering risks for complications of obesity.

What are Obesity-Related Conditions?

Obesity is a disease that raises your risk for a group of potentially serious conditions that include:

  • Certain types of cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke

Is the Metabolic Medical Weight Loss Center Right for Me?

Our offerings are for eligible patients, many with complications of obesity, who need a doctor’s assistance to lose weight.

You may benefit from medical weight loss if you:

  • Are a person with obesity and have metabolic syndrome: The team helps you manage symptoms, such as elevated blood sugar levels and high blood pressure.
  • Wish to pursue bariatric surgery: Your insurance may require doctor-supervised weight loss before approving the procedure.
  • Gain weight after bariatric surgery: Medical weight loss pinpoints the cause of weight gain or weight plateau before or after surgery. We then develop a plan to help you get back on track.

Medical Weight Loss at Nuvance Health: Why Choose Us?

An experienced doctor specializing in obesity medicine (sometimes called bariatric medicine) guides your care. You also benefit from the assistance of nutritionists, mental health counselors and more. We work together to help you make changes that can improve your long-term well-being. Highlights of our program include:

  • Personalized care
Each person experiences obesity and its complications differently. We take time to get to know you as an individual, helping us tailor care to your needs. This approach enables us to develop a weight loss plan that’s easier for you to stick to.
  • Coordination
We refer you to other Nuvance Health specialists, including cardiologists, endocrinologists (for diabetes) and sleep medicine doctors, whenever necessary. We communicate with the specialists you see, so you don’t have to worry about the details of your care.
  • Bariatric surgery
If bariatric surgery is right for you, we refer you to one of the experienced surgeons. We offer a range of procedures, including gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. Get more information about types of weight loss surgery we offer.
  • Supportive care
We give you the extra attention that can make a difference in your ability to lose weight and keep it off. In addition to frequent office visits, we are also available through telehealth. Our support groups provide information and encouragement from people going through similar challenges.

Medical Weight Loss: What to expect

Care starts with a detailed evaluation, including your complete medical history, current diet and eating behaviors. We screen for risks for metabolic syndrome and other complications of obesity, like liver disease and sleep apnea. We explain metabolic syndrome and its impact on your health in ways that are easy to understand. The team also describes how medical weight loss can help and supports you in making lifestyle changes that increase your chances of success. These efforts enable you to take an active role in improving your health.

Our Medical Weight Loss Program

You receive a personalized medical weight loss plan that may include:

  • Behavior modification: A mental health professional helps you explore thoughts and behaviors that can get in the way of achieving your goals. For example, emotional eating and a negative self-image can make it difficult to lose weight.
  • Nutrition counseling: A registered dietitian helps you set goals and make small changes in food choices to achieve them. You receive recommendations for healthy foods that meet your personal preferences. We also explain the role of vitamins and water in keeping you healthy.
  • Anti-obesity medications: For some patients, medications may be part of your medical weight loss plan. Options may include drugs to curb your appetite, improve feelings of fullness or regulate hunger hormones.
  • Physical activity: Even if you haven’t exercised in years, we help you get moving. We start with small goals that are reasonable for your circumstances. As you get stronger, we help you build on your achievements by adding other activities you enjoy doing.
