Nuvance Health midwives have been serving our communities for more than 35 years. Midwives offer the full scope of gynecological and maternity services with a holistic, empathetic approach.

What is a midwife?

A certified nurse midwife is a healthcare provider who offers supportive, family-centered care throughout the reproductive lifespan. They care for patients in all stages of life, from a teenager who is first accessing gynecology services to those looking for an obstetric provider or needing support during menopause.

Midwives have foundational training as nurses, which provides a unique emphasis on patient education and support. After their nursing certification, they complete an additional two years of advanced training to become a midwife. Their care philosophy is that the midwife’s role is to support the body’s natural processes, including pregnancy and childbirth. Many of the midwives at Nuvance have several decades of experience, setting them apart as experts equipped to offer you advanced, leading-edge care.

Midwifery Services: Why Choose Us?

When you choose the midwifery team, you benefit from:

  • A full range of services
Midwives offer an extensive range of healthcare services, from routine Pap smears to support during perimenopause and menopause. Midwives practice as independent providers, so you may see a midwife as your primary healthcare provider for your routine gynecologic or obstetric care.
  • Personalized support and education
Midwives offer longer appointment times that allow them to provide extensive patient support. They answer your questions and work to understand your concerns so They can create a personalized, effective care plan. Midwives inform and educate you on all your options so you feel empowered to make the healthcare decisions that are right for you.
  • Empowering childbirth experiences
The team provides extensive bedside services during childbirth, including hands-on support, mobility encouragement or hydrotherapy. Midwives also offer a full spectrum of pain management options, including nitrous oxide, intravenous (IV) medications or epidurals. The midwife philosophy is that birth is a normal physiological process and midwives empower and support women as they deliver.
  • Natural birth options
Many women who choose midwifery services want to have a natural birth or non-medicated birth, if possible. Midwives value personalized birth plans and advocate for the wishes and decisions of their patients. They support birthing people through all types of birth plans, including through natural or non-medicated births.
  • Integrated care models
The midwifery team collaborates with in-hospital providers such as perinatologists and obstetric hospitalists. If you need a higher level of care at any time during labor or delivery, your midwife consults with our on-site physicians. If any complications arise during childbirth, care is seamlessly coordinated with obstetric doctors who are available 24/7.
