Is Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia Care Right for You?

Dementia occurs when lapses in memory and other thinking (cognitive) skills get in the way of daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Symptoms of both conditions worsen over time. Receiving care from experienced specialists, such as the ones at Nuvance Health, may slow symptom progression and its effect on your life.
You may benefit from an Alzheimer’s disease or dementia evaluation if you are regularly:
  • Forgetting important details of your life, like the name of your hometown
  • Having difficulty with once-simple activities, including taking care of yourself
  • Feeling disoriented, such as not knowing how you got somewhere or where to go next
  • Getting confused easily while performing daily tasks like household chores
  • Exercising poor judgment, including driving recklessly

Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care at Nuvance Health: Why Choose Us?

At Nuvance Health, you have access to more of the services you need close to home. Skilled neurologists who specialize in cognitive disorders like dementia guide your care. The team sees patients in a timely manner, so you receive the services that help you move forward with your life. Highlights of our program include:

  • Timely, accurate diagnosis
Dementia symptoms occur for many reasons, including medication side effects and vascular diseases that limit blood flow to the brain. We accurately pinpoint the cause, so you receive prompt, appropriate care. We also detect Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in earlier stages, so you can start treatment as soon as possible.
  • Neuropsychology testing
Nuvance Health is one of the few programs in the region offering neuropsychology testing. This exam provides information about the specific cognitive skills you struggle with and their severity. Periodic testing once you start treatment helps us adjust care plans to meet your changing needs.
  • Family-centered approach
Having problems with cognitive skills can make it difficult to describe the challenges you face. With your permission, we talk to your loved ones about your symptoms and treatments. This open line of communication helps us assess treatment progress and coordinate additional services when necessary.
  • Clinical trials
Nuvance Health actively partners in research to advance Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care. These efforts put national clinical trials and promising new care methods within your reach. If you are eligible, we explain how a trial might help and together determine whether you should participate.
  • Member of Alzheimer's Foundation of America
In March 2022, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) welcomed Nuvance Health to its national network of member organizations. AFA provides direct care and services, support and education to individuals living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias and their families. Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Evaluation

We start by getting to know you and learning about your symptoms. You then receive a neurologic evaluation, which is a series of tests to assess brain functioning. We consider all possible causes for your symptoms, including other medical issues, like a sleep disorder or a previous stroke.

We may recommend imaging to rule out other neurologic problems, like infections or tumors. If it’s likely a form of dementia, we refer you to a neuropsychologist for an assessment.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Treatment and Support

Treatment often includes medications. The drugs that are right for you depend on your symptoms. We offer the latest options, some of which may only be available through clinical trials for eligible patients. The specialists’ experience and understanding of your needs helps you achieve results while minimizing side effects.

Living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia sometimes requires extra help from social workers. They help communicate your needs to care providers and coordinate solutions to practical problems, like needing extra help at home. If you might benefit from a social worker’s assistance, we refer you to local specialists with experience helping older adults.
