05/28/2025
Dr. Josh Marcus has led innovative brain and spine surgery at Norwalk Hospital and will now lead neurosurgical care at the Chief of Neurosurgery.
Joshua Marcus, MD, has been appointed Chief of Neurosurgery at Norwalk Hospital. A board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, Dr. Marcus has expertise in minimally invasive brain and spine surgery and neurointerventional radiology. He is also the Chief of Neurointerventional Radiology at Danbury and Norwalk hospitals.
“Dr. Marcus exemplifies the best in clinical innovation and patient care,” said Paul Wright, MD, Senior Vice President and System Chair of the Nuvance Health Neuroscience Institute, part of Northwell Health. “We are confident his leadership will help shape the future of neurosurgery at Norwalk Hospital.”
Advancing brain and spine surgery in Connecticut
Dr. Marcus has made a meaningful impact on patient care since joining the health system in 2016. He performed Connecticut’s first joint replacement spine surgery using the TOPS™ System, offering new hope to people with spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. This approach preserves mobility while relieving pressure on the spine — an advancement beyond traditional spinal fusion surgery.
Dr. Marcus and a specially trained team performed the first mechanical thrombectomy in Fairfield County, a lifesaving stroke procedure that improves outcomes and reduces long-term disability. He was also among the first in the state to offer minimally invasive hematoma evacuation for hemorrhagic stroke. Dr. Marcus also helped introduce a biplane angiography system that’s revolutionizing brain aneurysm and stroke care at Norwalk Hospital.
Recognized for innovation in neurosurgery and dedication to brain and spine health
From the outset of his career, Dr. Marcus has blended technical excellence with a deep commitment to improving patient outcomes. Patients describe him as both brilliant and compassionate — a unique combination that helps people feel confident and cared for during some of their most vulnerable moments.
“Dr. Marcus is deeply committed to his patients and the greater Norwalk community. He is widely recognized among his peers as the ideal leader to advance neurosurgical care at Norwalk Hospital. We are very fortunate Dr. Marcus has agreed to step into this leadership role,” said Aimee Derry, VP of the Nuvance Health Neuroscience Institute, part of Northwell Health.
Dr. Marcus was named one of Fairfield County’s “40 Under 40” by the Fairfield County Business Journal in 2019, a distinction that recognized his early and ongoing leadership in advancing neurosurgical care. The award celebrates rising professionals who demonstrate vision, passion and a track record of making a positive impact in their fields and communities. For Dr. Marcus, it affirmed what patients and colleagues already knew: He was on a mission to change lives through innovative, more effective care.
