Vassar Brothers Medical Center celebrates one-year anniversary of cardiac lab

05/07/2025
On April 15, the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Lab at Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC) reached an exciting milestone — its one-year anniversary.
This cutting-edge facility represents a leap forward in cardiovascular care for the Hudson Valley region, ushering in a new era of advanced treatments and improved patient experiences. Situated on the eighth floor of the modern Patient Pavilion, with stunning views of the Hudson River, the lab has not only transformed procedural efficiency but has also created an environment that prioritizes patient comfort and staff empowerment.

Over the past year, the lab has demonstrated extraordinary progress, performing an average of 20-30 complex cases daily. The procedures range from critical interventions like ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) treatment, Mitral Clip valve placement and atrial septal defect (ASD) closure in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (CCL), to life-saving techniques such as VT ablation, lead extraction and transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) in the Electrophysiology (EP) Lab. With increased space, cutting-edge technology and a compassionate care philosophy, the lab continues to redefine standards in cardiovascular care.

On progress
Q: What were the most significant achievements of the lab in its first year of operation?
A: In its first year of operation, the CCL and EP Lab has made remarkable strides. The move to its new location in the Patient Pavilion allowed for larger procedure rooms and semi-private recovery bays, significantly improving workflow efficiency and patient experience. The implementation of new electronic medical records, a hemodynamic monitoring system and patient tracking boards streamlined processes, enabling staff to perform up to 30 cases daily. Additionally, the division into two specialized teams — CCL and EP Lab — enhanced focus and expertise, fostering professional growth through continuous educational opportunities.
Patient impact
Q: How has the lab enhanced patient care and outcomes over the past year?
A: The lab’s thoughtfully designed space promotes tranquility, with abundant natural light and soothing aesthetics, creating a calm and supportive setting for patients and staff alike. This environment has positively influenced patient care, delivering not only clinical excellence but also an emotionally reassuring experience. Reduced waiting times, combined with specialized, compassionate care, have significantly improved patient outcomes.

Innovation and technology
Q: Have there been any advancements in technology or procedures introduced in the lab since its opening?
A: Since its relocation, the lab has embraced cutting-edge technology and practices. Highlights include the introduction of Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) in EP procedures, a non-thermal treatment for atrial fibrillation (AFib) that uses high-voltage, short-duration electrical pulses to damage and destroy the tissue causing irregular heartbeats, without the need for heat or extreme cold. Also, we introduced the use of Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy technology in the Cath Lab, a minimally invasive procedure that uses sound waves to break down calcium deposits in arteries, making it easier to treat blocked or narrowed vessels. Additionally, ongoing clinical trials have cemented the lab’s reputation as a leader in pioneering solutions for complex cardiovascular conditions.

Future goals
Q: What are the plans for the lab’s growth and development in the coming years?
A: Looking ahead, the lab aims to advance its structural heart program, expand its PFA capabilities, adopt new device offerings and exceed STEMI metrics to deliver even better patient care. Staff growth, enhanced workflow efficiency and continuous quality improvement remain central to its vision for the future.
