Bariatric Surgery at Nuvance Health: Why Choose Us?

Bariatric surgeons, some with decades of experience, guide your treatment. You also benefit from the careful attention of dietitians, mental health professionals and other Nuvance Health specialists, as necessary. Learn more about weight loss surgery and what to expect. Highlights of our bariatric program include:

  • Accreditation
Many of our hospitals maintain accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®). This prestigious designation recognizes our commitment to safety and care that meets or exceeds national standards.
  • Minimally invasive surgery
The team typically performs bariatric surgery using laparoscopic, endoscopic and robotic techniques. These methods involve small incisions and sophisticated technologies.
  • Ongoing support
Our team is available to you before your procedure, as you recover and years after surgery. If you slip into old habits, we provide encouragement and recommendations to get back on track. You can also participate in support groups. Explore weight loss follow-up care and support groups.
  • Nonsurgical weight loss
Bariatric surgery isn’t for everyone. If you do not wish to have surgery or do not qualify, you may benefit from medical weight loss. A doctor specializing in obesity medicine provides individualized treatment and support. Read more about our medical weight loss program.
Types of Bariatric Surgery We Offer
We recommend the right procedure for you based on your weight loss goals, overall health and personal preferences. The team explains each option and answers your questions, so you can make informed treatment decisions. Bariatric surgery options at Nuvance Health include:

Gastric bypass surgery

With gastric bypass, we create a small stomach pouch and partially reroute your intestines. After surgery, you consume fewer calories and don’t absorb all of the calories you eat.

Gastric sleeve surgery

The stomach is reduced in size and the part of the stomach that controls the sensation of hunger is removed. You feel full on smaller meals and not as hungry between meals.

Gastric balloon

We place the Orbera® Weight Loss Balloon in your stomach during a nonsurgical procedure. The balloon reduces how much food it takes to feel full and remains in your stomach for about a year. Changing old habits during this time may help you eat smaller meals after we remove it. Insurance typically does not cover this option, and it is only available for patients whose body mass index (BMI) is below 35.

Bariatric revision surgery

If you gain weight after bariatric surgery or experience complications, you may qualify for a revision procedure. We use minimally invasive techniques, such as endoscopic surgery, to perform revisions through small incisions.

During bariatric revision surgery, we may:

  • Repair complications
  • Reshape your stomach to make a stretched-out pouch or sleeve smaller
  • Remove a gastric band
  • Convert from one type of surgery to another, such as from a sleeve to a bypass
