Vassar Brothers Medical Center welcomes new cardiac surgeon

Gabriele Maria Iacona, MD, knows what it’s like to be a patient, he said, so he is very empathetic and attentive to the needs of his own.

 

Dr. Iacona recently joined Nuvance Health as a cardiac surgeon at Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC).

“I am proficient in putting patients at ease and delivering excellent surgical care with a commitment to achieving optimal outcomes,” he said.

 

At VBMC, he performs a variety of cardiac procedures and counts multi- and total arterial coronary bypass grafting and debulking intracardiac masses without open heart surgery among his specialties.

With more than 27 years of experience, both in Europe and the U.S., Dr. Iacona most recently worked at MedStar Washington Hospital in Washington D.C., where he served as an attending cardiac surgeon.

He also worked as a clinical associate in cardiac surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in Cleveland, Ohio.

 

Dr. Iacona hails from Italy and was trained there and in the United States in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery.

 

He earned his medical degree from the Universita’ Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, Italy. Before completing his fellowship in adult cardiac surgery, mechanical cardiac support and cardiac transplantation at Yale New Haven Hospital in Waterbury, CT., he served as a staff surgeon and clinical coordinator of a pediatric cardiac center in Spain, delivering care to patients from the Canary Islands and Africa.

 

In addition to English, Dr. Iacona is fluent in Italian, Spanish and French.
