Norwalk Hospital announces first Latino Chair of Board of Directors, new board members

Norwalk Hospital has appointed the first Latino to ever serve as the chair of the board of directors as well as new leadership and board members.

 

Norwalk Hospital has appointed Pablo D. Colón III as Chair of the Board of Directors, also making him the first Latino person to serve in the position since the hospital began operating in 1893. In addition to Colón’s new position, Susan Beyman has been announced as the new Vice Chair and Dr. Jean Hammel as Chief of Staff.

 

“I am honored and humbled to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors for Norwalk Hospital. As the first Latino in this role, I’m also grateful to those that came before me who paved the way for diversity and inclusion in board leadership here at the hospital,” Colón said. “This board fosters a culture where every voice is heard, and every perspective is valued and enriches our collective success.  I’m excited to lead this group of dedicated volunteers who care so deeply for our community hospital.”

Colón is the Executive Director of the Avangrid Foundation and Director of Corporate Citizenship at Avangrid (NYSE: AGR). Colón leads the Avangrid Foundation and develops strategies that further the company’s environmental, social and corporate governance goals. Colón also serves as a member of the board of directors of The WorkPlace, is the Vice President of the Greater Bridgeport Latino Network and is a member of the Core Leadership Team of Bridgeport Prospers, a collective impact initiative working to improve outcomes for youth in Bridgeport from cradle to career.  Colón holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Fairfield University. He lives in Stratford with his wife and their two daughters.

Beyman has held several volunteer positions in the local community since retiring as Counsel at People’s Bank. Beyman joined Norwalk Hospital’s Board in 2020 and serves on its Professional Affairs Committee, Nominating Committee and Community Voice Work Group and additional Co-Chairs the Community Health Committee. Beyman is also a member of the Board of Directors of Family and Children’s Agency where she serves as Co-Chair of the Risk Management Committee and a Governance Committee member. Beyman holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and a Juris Doctor degree from Fordham Law School. She and her husband live in Norwalk where they raised their three grown sons.

Dr. Hammel has served in many leadership roles over the past 14 years, taking on her current positions of Vice Chair of the emergency department in 2015 and Associate Chief of the Medical Staff in 2022. She holds a medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco Medical School where she graduated top of her class, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government with health policy focus from Harvard University where she was inducted in the Phi Beta Kappa Society for high academic achievement. Dr. Hammel completed emergency medicine residency at the highly regarded NYU/Bellevue Emergency Medicine Residency Program and was selected as Chief Resident in her fourth year.  After residency, Dr. Hammel joined the Yale University faculty as Associate Residency Director in Emergency Medicine before transitioning to Norwalk in 2010. Dr. Hammel lives in New Canaan with her husband, four children and two dogs.

Sean Armstrong has joined the Board of Directors of Norwalk Hospital as the newest board member. Armstrong is the Managing Principal of Westport Capital Partners, joining the firm at its inception. Throughout his career, Armstrong has been responsible for industrial, multi-family, office, self-storage, hotel and retail investments across the United States, Europe and Japan. His experience includes property acquisition through repositioning, and ultimately disposition of fund assets. He has overseen properties in all stages of their life cycle, from the development of new projects to adaptive repositioning of properties including change of use. Armstrong graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering magna cum laude from the University of Southern California, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Armstrong holds a Master of Business Administration in finance, also from the University of Southern California.
