Breast surgeon Dr. Lisa D. Curcio has joined Nuvance Health to establish a breast surgery program at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY. Dr. Curcio will also see patients for office visits at Nuvance Health’s Kingston Multispecialty Center in Kingston, NY.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Curcio and expand our offerings for patients with breast cancer and other types of breast diseases,” said Denise George, president, Northern Dutchess Hospital. “Residents in our communities now have a new level of breast care available to them; Dr. Curcio is the area’s first fellowship-trained breast surgeon who specializes in both oncology and breast surgery. We also invested a quarter million dollars in state-of-the-art operating room equipment at Northern Dutchess Hospital.”

“We want residents in our communities to have the option to stay close to home for their breast care,” said Dr. Susan K. Boolbol, chief of breast surgical oncology and the breast program at Nuvance Health. “With the addition of Dr. Curcio, we now have diagnostics, treatment, and after-care services in the Rhinebeck area.”

Dr. Curcio decided to specialize in breast surgical oncology after she was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 38 years old.

“I realized I could offer patients with breast cancer a unique perspective about their care options and what they were experiencing because I had breast cancer too,” said Dr. Curcio.

Dr. Curcio approaches breast cancer care by getting to know each patient and developing a treatment plan together.

“I advocate for patient education so each patient has the information they need to actively participate in their care,” said Dr. Curcio.

Dr. Curcio also has a special interest in survivorship and breast cancer prevention, including the role of genetic testing.

“One of my greatest accomplishments as a physician is working with families that have hereditary breast cancer,” said Dr. Curcio. “The results of genetic testing can help our patients and their families make informed decisions and be proactive about their health care.”

Before joining Nuvance Health, Dr. Curcio practiced at Memorial Care Medical Group, and was medical director of surgical services at Breastlink in Laguna Hills, CA. Dr. Curcio completed a surgical oncology fellowship at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, CA; and a general surgery residency and an internship at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Curcio earned her medical degree from George Washington University Medical School, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Scranton in Scranton, PA.

Dr. Curcio was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. She was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS where she was the chief of surgical oncology at Keesler Medical Center.

“In the military, I was performing cancer surgeries on all types of patients,” said Dr. Curcio. “It made me the surgeon I am today, and I’m very thankful for my time in the military.”

Dr. Curcio enjoys traveling and spending time with her two children, ages 17 and 21.
